How the readiness check works
Each item covers a common failure point in island homes, such as blocked gutters on sloped lots or sump pumps without battery backup. The score counts the items you already have in place.
A high score does not guarantee a dry house, and a low score does not mean a flood is coming. It is a prompt for a homeowner walk-through, not a home inspection.
Readiness questions
[Process] How often should I run this check?
Once a year is a good habit, ideally in early autumn before the wet season starts. Run it again after any major plumbing or roof work, or when you buy a new appliance.
[Cost] Which fix gives the most protection?
Knowing where the main shutoff is and being able to close it quickly limits most plumbing losses. After that, a working sump pump with battery backup and clear gutters protect against rain.
[Safety] Do I need a plumber for these fixes?
Many are owner tasks such as clearing gutters and testing valves. Replacing hoses, installing a backup pump or adding a backwater valve is work for a licensed plumber.
